Mommy Makeover in Mumbai

A mommy makeover is not a single operation. It is a combination of body contouring procedures, planned together in one surgical plan, that addresses the changes pregnancy and breastfeeding leave behind — most often stretched abdominal skin, separated abdominal muscles, loss of breast volume or position, and localised fat that does not respond to diet or exercise.

Because every pregnancy and every body is different, the combination is decided at consultation. Dr. Shivprasad Date (MBBS, MRCS Edinburgh, M.Ch & DNB Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) assesses which components are appropriate for you, and which are better staged or left out.

What a mommy makeover usually combines

  • Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) — removes excess lower abdominal skin and repairs separated abdominal muscles (rectus diastasis)
  • Breast lift (mastopexy) — restores breast position where the skin envelope has stretched
  • Breast augmentation — restores volume lost after breastfeeding, sometimes combined with a lift
  • Breast reduction — where increased breast size is causing neck, back or shoulder symptoms
  • Liposuction — contours the flanks, waist or thighs alongside the abdominal work

Not every patient needs all of these. A plan may involve two components or four, and in some cases it is safer to stage the surgery across more than one session.

Who it is suitable for

A mommy makeover is generally considered once you have finished having children and your weight has been stable for several months. Breastfeeding should be complete, as breast shape and volume continue to change while feeding. You should be in good general health, a non-smoker or willing to stop well before surgery, and have realistic expectations of what body contouring can and cannot change.

It is a contouring operation, not a weight-loss operation. If significant weight loss is still planned, results are usually better if surgery follows it rather than precedes it. Where there has been major weight loss already, post weight-loss body contouring may be the more appropriate pathway.

The consultation

At consultation, Dr. Date reviews your medical and obstetric history, examines the abdominal wall for muscle separation and skin quality, assesses breast position and volume, and discusses which combination of procedures addresses your specific concerns. Anaesthetic considerations, the length of surgery, expected recovery, scar position and the risks of each component are explained before any decision is made.

Recovery in outline

Because a mommy makeover combines procedures, recovery is longer than for any single one of them. Most patients need meaningful rest for the first week, wear compression garments as directed, and avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for around four to six weeks. Swelling settles gradually, and the final shape continues to refine over several months.

Risks

As with any surgery, a mommy makeover carries risks. These include bleeding, infection, delayed wound healing, changes in skin or nipple sensation, asymmetry, seroma, scarring that differs from expectation, and the risks associated with general anaesthesia. Combining procedures also lengthens operating time, which is taken into account when deciding whether to perform them together or in stages. These risks are discussed individually at consultation.

FAQs

How long should I wait after childbirth before considering a mommy makeover?

Most surgeons advise waiting until you have finished breastfeeding and your weight has been stable for several months, commonly at least six months after you stop feeding. This allows breast volume and abdominal tissue to settle so the surgical plan is based on your final shape rather than a changing one.

Can all the procedures be done in one operation?

Often yes, but not always. Whether the components are combined or staged depends on the total operating time, your general health and the extent of each procedure. Safety governs this decision, and it is made at consultation rather than in advance.

Will a mommy makeover repair separated abdominal muscles?

Yes. Where pregnancy has separated the rectus abdominis muscles, the tummy tuck component includes repairing that separation. This is part of why the abdominal result differs from what exercise alone can achieve.

How long does recovery take?

Expect to rest for the first week, resume light non-strenuous activity over the following two to three weeks, and avoid heavy lifting and vigorous exercise for around four to six weeks. Swelling reduces gradually and the final result develops over several months.
